Beginners Mind Tincture
This formula for supporting the focus and attention surplus of children of all ages, including elderly
Focus, Attention Deficit, Catnip, and Beginner's Mind - this time of year, as the winds scatter the dried leaves like homework spilling out of a backpack, I get a lot of parents asking for support for children and focus. The span of consciousness that drifts outside of the confines of a box, lit with fluorescent lights, interrupted by bells are pathologized with letters like A D H and D. I call it Always Dialed to Higher Dimensions. The plant I love for this is catnip. Yes, the plant that makes a cat’s pupils dilated, bounce off the walls, bite you and then pass out and lick themselves is inverse for the human condition. Catnip, a member of the mint family has warming, slightly skunky aromatic qualities. Anytime a plant presents with skunkyness, you can bet it has a sedative effect on the nervous system. Catnip’s sedative qualities are only in terms of the aperture of the attention span. It takes a big wide flood lamp of consciousness and closes the gate to a spotlight, helping with focus. I also like how it helps with the aggressive behavior that comes with navigating the emotional side of learning with the modern restrictions in a school setting. My son and I harvested this, combined with fresh chamomile and lemon balm from the garden for the new product, Beginner’s Mind. We combined these plants in glycerine instead of alcohol, so that it would be well received by kiddos like himself. It’s not just for kids though, I will use it to sit down and type up this message, deliver it with a surplus of attention, and get back to focusing on the next order of business to keep my mind and mood nice and tidy.
